Trans Day of Visibility: The Holy Work of Being Seen

There are ways of being seen that feel like exposure.
And there are ways of being seen that feel like home.
Trans Day of Visibility holds both.
For many transgender and nonbinary people, visibility is not a trend or a moment of celebration. It is a daily negotiation with a world that often misunderstands, fears, or rejects what it does not recognize. It can mean risk. It can mean exhaustion. It can mean carrying a quiet question everywhere you go: Is it safe for me to be fully myself here?
At The Circle, we want to be a community where the answer is yes. Not just in words, but in practice. Not just in welcome statements, but in how we live with one another.
We believe that every human life is shaped by the hands of God, not once, but continually. Creation is not a closed chapter. It is an ongoing relationship. We are not finished works. We are living clay, still being formed.
This means that growth is holy. Change is holy. Becoming is holy.
The story of faith is not about fitting into a fixed mold. It is about responding to the Spirit’s invitation to live truthfully and courageously. For transgender people, that invitation often carries a particular weight. It can require naming a truth that others may not understand. It can require trusting that God’s voice is louder than fear.
We do not pretend that visibility is easy. We do not pretend that love always comes quickly from the world. But we hold onto the conviction that the kin-dom of God expands wherever people are allowed to live without hiding.
So today we celebrate trans lives.
We honor the courage it takes to exist authentically.
We commit ourselves again to the slow, sacred work of making our community safer, more honest, and more loving.
Because being seen should not feel like a threat.
It should feel like grace.

A Devotional for Trans Day of Visibility
“YHWH, you’ve searched me, and you know me." — Psalm 139:1
Reflection
Take a moment to notice how often you edit yourself.
How often you adjust your words, your body, your story, so that others feel more comfortable.
Many transgender people carry this weight constantly.
Visibility is not simply about being known. It is about deciding, again and again, whether it is safe to be known.
But the gaze of God is different from the gaze of the world.
God does not look at you to measure your worth.
God looks at you with recognition.
With deep, patient understanding.
With the kind of love that is not threatened by your becoming.
Spiritual growth is not about shrinking into acceptability.
It is about stepping more fully into truth.
For some, that truth includes transition. For others, it includes learning how to make space for experiences that are not their own. For all of us, it includes trusting that the Spirit is still at work.
Visibility, in the presence of God, becomes something sacred.
It becomes the moment when fear loosens its grip and love has room to breathe.
Practice
Sit quietly for a moment.
Place your hands open in your lap.
Breathe in slowly.
Breathe out slowly.
Pray this simple prayer:
If you are transgender or questioning:
God, stay with me as I grow into the truth of who I am.
If you are cisgender:
God, help me become someone others can be safe around.
If you are unsure where you stand:
God, teach me how to love with humility and courage.
Prayer
Creative and faithful God,
You know us more deeply than we know ourselves.
You see our fears, our hopes, and our becoming.
Give courage to those who feel unseen.
Give tenderness to those learning how to listen.
Shape us into a community where no one has to hide to belong.
Make your love visible through us.
Amen.
