Being Shaped in the Hard Middle: A Devotional for when you feel stuck in the middle of life

There are seasons when life feels like one long “in-between.” You’re not where you were, but you’re not yet where you hope to be. The middle can feel confusing, exhausting, and lonely.
In Acts 20, Paul speaks to a beloved community in their own hard middle. He reminds them that God’s grace has been shaping them all along—and calls them to keep watching over one another, especially “the weak,” with courage and tenderness. Faith, in this picture, isn’t about having everything neatly resolved. It’s about staying rooted in love when the path ahead is unclear.
Many of us know what it’s like to feel wary of church, or even wounded by it. The good news of this passage is that God’s story for community is different: a flock that protects instead of devours, leaders who serve instead of control, people who keep showing up for one another in real, embodied ways.
In the service, we heard one story of resurrection that began with something as ordinary as an invitation—someone saying, “There’s a church where you’ll be valued, where you can bring your whole self.” It didn’t fix everything overnight, but it opened the door to healing, belonging, and new life.

As we move toward Easter Sunday in the park, we’re leaning into that same hope. We’re preparing to gather under open sky, to sing and pray and celebrate resurrection in a way that feels spacious and real. If you’re longing for a community where you can exhale and be honest about both your questions and your hope, you’re welcome to join us. Reflection Question:
Where, in your own “hard middle,” might God be inviting you to show up with protective, courageous love—for yourself or for someone else?
